Rare 18th-Century Volume – Early American Quaker Printing (1787)
Beautifully bound 18th-century volume featuring Gough’s History Vol. I, paired with an original Philadelphia imprint:
Scripture Truths Demonstrated in Thirty-Two Sermons by Stephen Crisp, printed and sold by Joseph James at his Chestnut Street printing office, Philadelphia, 2nd Month (February) 27th, 1787.
Crisp was one of the most influential Quaker ministers of the 17th century, and this early American printing of his sermons is a rare survival from colonial religious presses.
Features:
•Full contemporary leather binding with gilt spine title “Gough’s History Vol. I”
•Philadelphia printing advertisement leaf from 1787
•Handwritten provenance inscriptions dated 1802 and 1889
•Tight binding with minor rubbing and age wear consistent with late 18th-century volumes
•Likely part of a four-volume set originally gifted through Quaker families
A striking relic of early American religious and printing history — ideal for collectors of Quaker texts, early Americana, or 18th-century theology.
